Stunning fans with her alluring vocals and evocative lyricism, Vancouver electro pop artist Serena Sun stands her ground in her empowering new single “Breadcrumbs,” available today across streaming platforms. With the new single, Serena announces her upcoming debut album Shadows On The Ceiling, set for release June 3, 2022.
Becoming an example of standing tall and speaking her truth, “Breadcrumbs” continues her narrative; “stop giving me the cold shoulder, what’s the space for? I ain’t got the time for games,” Serena Sings as she empowers listeners to accept nothing less than what they deserve.
Sharing further on the track, Serena notes, “‘Breadcrumbs’ is about navigating the waters during the early stages of a relationship and reclaiming your power when the person you’re dating doesn’t give their 100%. It’s supposed to remind the listener that their time and energy is valuable, and they shouldn’t settle for the bare minimum in a relationship.”
OUR MUNDANE OPINION: Inspiring, cocky & extremely interesting
What inspired your track “Breadcrumbs”?
Breadcrumbs was inspired by a conversation I was having with my co-writers about dating in our 20s. It’s about being in relationships where one person is more invested than the other. The underlying message is basically telling my past self and my friends in these situations to remember they can step away at any time if they’re not being treated the way they want to be. I never want anyone I love to settle for “breadcrumbs” in their relationships.
How do you keep your inspiration high every day?
Lately, I’ve been getting back into journaling my thoughts every morning or evening. I think being constantly aware and expressive of my feelings really helps me to stay inspired when I’m songwriting alone or hopping in a session with others.
What’s the best way to stay productive as an artist?
I think there’s always a long laundry list of tasks to do as an independent artist, but blocking out days or times for similar tasks really helps. For example, having an admin morning, then having a couple hours blocked out for a creative session in the afternoon. I used to get so overwhelmed about striking the right balance, but I’m getting better the more I do it.
What’s something you would change in the entertainment industry today?
We’re already starting to see a shift, but I would continue to spotlight those in marginalized communities and give them more chances to share their art and experiences in big ways. I would love to see more and more AAPI artists and songwriters flourish in the pop world; as well as more women in production and engineering roles. The latest statistic I read was that only 2% of producers are women–that needs to change!
With both Body and Breadcrumbs you showed your personal side unapologetically. What drives your storytelling and songwriting?
I am always striving to make art that reflects what I’ve gone through honestly and in unique ways. I know I am not the only one who’s been through certain experiences, and if I can capture my feelings towards them honestly, I’m sure others will relate. Also, I’ve always wanted to make songs that are true to themselves; what I mean by that is whenever I write a song acoustically, I want the production to match the feeling of its lyrical meaning.
What’s your favorite thing to do when you feel uninspired?
When I’m feeling uninspired, it either means I need to take a break or bring my existing ideas to people I trust to flesh them out. When I’m in a room with other hardworking and talented people, there is rarely a session that goes by without a spark. I feel like we all have stories to tell, they’re just waiting to be uncovered. Co-writing is all about finding the right people to help tell our stories authentically. Also, if I’m feeling burnt out by the constant movement and pressure, the best thing I can do for my work is to take a step away and come back with a fresh mind.
What are your plans for the rest of 2022?
I am releasing my debut EP in June and am so excited to share it with the world! It’s called “Shadows on the Ceiling,” and it’s about addressing past traumas head-on. It’s a really special project to me because writing the songs signified the beginning of my healing process. I hope these songs are healing for those listening along!
