Mia Yermeche’s stunning performance on The Big Deal affirmed what many already knew, that the young and talented singer is poised for a spectacular solo career ahead.
Now, the 19-year-old singer and songwriter is once again stealing the show with a new single, Comfortable, and it already has music fans and critics alike labelling it a hit.
Yermeche has gone from strength to strength following her debut on the big screen, and Comfortable is proving to be her best work to date. The upbeat pop anthem has the bouncy beats and bops that make it a must-have on any playlist, while also encompassing a strong message of the conflicting nature of relationships and love.
Based on personal experiences, Comfortable tells a story of one friend helping another in a toxic relationship after several red flags start cropping up.
What’s your story as an artist?
I’ve been singing since forever! It’s only within the past year or so that I’ve discovered my love for songwriting as well.
Growing up, I performed in many musical theatre productions and would also post cover videos online on my YouTube and Instagram pages! I released my first song ‘Butterflies’ earlier in April of this year and I cannot wait to share more of my original music!
I also appeared on the talent show, ‘The Big Deal’ which I am so grateful for as I gained so many amazing experiences throughout my time working on it.
I am still learning and growing as an artist every single day and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me!
What do you want your music to communicate?
I want my music to communicate my truth, my experiences and my opinions. I think of my music as almost like a diary of some sort, where I express my feelings and my thoughts.
Because I am so young right now, I have so much to experience and I am grateful that I can use songwriting to vent about those experiences and therefore my music will be able to communicate my experiences with listeners.
What are some sources of inspiration for your storytelling?
I find inspiration in everything! A lot of the time, I take inspiration from the people around me like my family and my friends. Whenever I am going through something in my life or maybe my friends are, I definitely use that to my advantage to create stories within my music and convey a message or lesson.
Who is an artist that you look up to more than others today?
I have always looked up to Lady Gaga! I think she is just amazing, she knows zero artistic boundaries and is someone who has always continuously never been afraid to step out of her comfort zone and has never confined herself into one particular box, that in my opinion, is one of the most inspiring and strongest assets that you can have as an artist.
What’s the record or artist that made you realize you wanted to be an artist?
There are far too many! Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga are probably the artists that have inspired me most and have always amazed me when it comes to their work and artistic vision!
Tell us about your latest release and how it came about?
My latest release ‘Comfortable’ is a song I wrote in which I am basically giving advice to a friend of mine. It was one of those situations that made you so frustrated because I personally could see how toxic this relationship was but my friend who was actually in the relationship was too ‘blinded by love’ to see true reality and real intentions.
I wrote this song early last year in lockdown, I came up with the hook first and then the rest followed very quickly. ‘Comfortable’ was probably my favourite song to write so far because of how easy and almost effortlessly it all came together. I find that when you know exactly what it is that you want to say within a song the process feels very natural.
The song was produced by F.O.B Beats, who I am such a fan of! He really did a great job and I am so glad that we got to work on this together as I truly believe he saw my entire vision and we were on the same wavelength for sure!
What inspires your sound?
Usually whatever music I’m currently listening to or liking at the time of creating is what inspires the sound that I gravitate towards at that moment.
What’s your favourite tune of yours?
I have only released 2 songs officially to date and so I dont have much to choose from but ‘Comfortable’ is definitely a favourite of mine. Of course I love all of the songs I have written, I can’t wait to release more originals very soon, ‘All Day Love’ is another one of mine that I am loving right now!
What are some things you really want to accomplish as an artist?
I hope to accomplish many things as an artist, one is being able to inspire through my art.
I hope to be able to inspire and influence future generations of musicians through my music, similar to how now everyday I myself take so much inspiration from past generations of musicians that came before me!
Favourite lyric you ever wrote?
‘You’re playing my mind,
your thoughts are embedded,
your writing the story but not taking credit’
Was there ever a moment when you felt like giving up?
No! Never! Of course there can be moments where I may feel deflated, underwhelmed or even disappointed when it comes to my journey as a musician but I don’t think I will ever give up regardless of what happens, purely because of how much I believe in myself.
What is the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
A life lived in fear is a life half lived!
What do you think the next game changer will be in the music industry and entertainment scene?
Drill music! I really think that drill will definitely become very mainstream in the music industry, it’s growing at such a fast rate and I think it could definitely be a very popular genre of music in the near future.
