‘Future You and Future Me’ is like condensing the pain and shortness of breath that you feel after a breakup in a four-minute capsule. Just as she is able to make you remember the pain, to that same extent, Mae Deline manages to fill you with hope, precisely about the future. An odd balance that maybe most artists don’t find themselves achieving with such ease.

The LA-based artist definitely has the ability to make brilliant, sinuous melodies with soul-penetrating lyrics. Stern and composed even as pain streamed down her soul. The song is a piece loaded with nostalgia, sadness, and pain. Musically, a guitar and Mae’s deep, heartfelt voice are all it took to convey all the emotions that embrace vulnerability.

“Future You And Future Me is a snapshot of a stage in the grieving process. Perhaps it was the “denial phase” of my breakup where I was having wishful thinking. I knew the relationship was over but I coped by fantasizing that maybe, in some future universe, I’m a different person and they’re a different person and that as two changed people, there is a chance it could work out again if it’s really meant to be”, Mae said about the song’s writing process.

There’s no denying her virtues as a lyricist either. She uses exquisite terms to describe her feelings. Ethereal and elegant through and through. Fragile and strong. Mae Deline grew up listening to Jewel, Kate Bush, and Laurie Anderson, and there’s no doubt that she could be on track to reach the heights those artists achieved.

Before ‘Future You and Future Me’, Mae presented ‘Black Hole’, a song inspired by a past relationship that was not meeting her emotional needs. “I craved more intimacy and connection than my partner was capable of giving me. I felt pushed away and kept out and the pain of that rejection felt so catastrophic”, she confessed in an interview.

Mae Deline anticipates -in her Instagram bio- that on the 23rd of each month, there will be a new release, so keep an eye on Mae’s music.
