Sometimes I want to sit in my room

Remember when I’d break the rules

“Life can be a drag” is often a bit of an understatement, and yearning for simpler times is probably a perfectly healthy and normal response to the realization that there are bills to pay and vital responsibilities to attend to.

From ‘Charlotte Sometimes’ To ‘JPOLND’ and now ‘LACES ‘ (Fulltime?). American Singer-songwriter Jessica Charlotte Poland – AKA Jessica Vaughn has been writing and producing music across the board in a wide variety of styles, genres, and formats, being credited as writer, composer, and performer on Hasbro cartoons such as Jem & the Holograms, Baby Alive, Littlest Pet Shop, Equestria Girls, and more. Her work has also been featured on Series, films, and specials all over Netflix, ABC, and the CW.

For a while now, Jessica’s been releasing music as LACES, with last year being a particularly productive (and high-quality!) one for this new project and alter-ego, and for this particular release, she’s recruited the talents of the ever-amazing Boh Doran to punch up this 90s throwback alt-rock anthem.

Regarding the track’s origin, LACES explains: “In My Room” explores the nostalgia of what it felt like to be teenagers in our rooms but as adults. This song is meant to take us back to a time when we had had Backstreet Boys posters plastered all over our walls and Savage Garden stickers on our headboards.

The song kicks off with a noisy and unclear crowd-like noise that I suppose represents the hectic world of today’s adulthood, but this is quickly broken by a spunky guitar riff and the background noise fades into an ethereal summer haze that gives way to the incandescent and youthful vocals that take you way back some twenty-something years with its endearing and dreamy melody.

“In My Room” is music to reminisce and daydream to, while its meaning is laid plainly by the lyrics, it’s really all in how the melody affects us emotionally in ways unseen that really sends us “back to when we could merely fantasize about what life could be as opposed to what it should be.” in LACES’ own words.
