Tell us about your style of music and how it has evolved over the years.

Growing up I was listening to everything from Britney Spears and *NSync to Nina Simon and Beethoven. I like to think I am influenced by those varied approaches to music.

When I first started writing my own music, I leaned more heavily into an acoustic, singer-songwriter sound. Similar to my musical tastes, this album, Aftermath, covers multiple genres and represents my evolution as an artist from singer-songwriter into alternative-pop.

Tell us about Bad Energy and what inspired this title.

I have always been a people pleaser. Even when it comes to people who really don’t deserve it. In the last few years, I finally started to say ‘no’ and put up boundaries. Someone once told me that the only people who have a problem with your boundaries are those who benefit from you not having any.

This song is about the people who are toxic and not deserving of your energy. Whether you know their ‘Bad Energy’ from first-hand experience or intuition, it is important to protect yourself and prioritize your own happiness.

Tell us about Fake it and what inspired this title.

“Fake It” is one of my favorite songs on the album, in part, because it was inspired by the title of a class at the University of Michigan Law School.

My Property Professor taught a class called ‘Faking It.’ The general principles always seemed to convey that people are afraid of being their genuine selves and often stray from their dreams due to fear of failure.

I have always struggled with imposter syndrome. And for the longest time it was something I tried to hide. When I finally told someone that insecurity, I felt free.

I discovered that so many people struggle with similar feelings. I wanted to set us all free with that song and bring light to that deep dark secret. It is okay to feel like an imposter sometimes – we all do.

How do these tracks fit into your upcoming EP Aftermath II?

They represent a cohesive package and show my artistic journey in the wake of loss and rediscovery.

How has your art evolved since Aftermath I?

There is a pop progression in the course of my EP releases and you will see that even more in my album, Aftermath, coming out June 14th.

What is your way of translating life into music? Do you use music to keep track of your life experiences?

When I write each song, I am trying to capture a chapter, a moment, or even a feeling. Then, we face the challenge of supporting those lyrics and melodies. For this album, we really focused on what each song needed and that really drove our decisions for their treatment. Figuring out what sounds and tones best serve the message or feeling we are trying to convey.

I use a combination of my music and other people’s music to keep track of life experiences and document my own. One of the great things about music is its ability to transport you to another time. I have fond memories of Frank Sinatra and the Rolling Stones with specific memories in my life. I hope I can one day bring that nostalgia and joy to others.

What do you think your main message is with your music?

My main message is to be authentic. From a love song for my husband and a 90s flashback dance, to a law school lesson and the loss of my father, my music covers all terrains and a multitude of genres. Through all this, I hope people realize that the best way to grow and connect with others is to express your authentic self.

What can we expect from you this year?

There is a lot going on this next year! I have my next single “Fake It” coming out on March 29th, followed by an EP May 3rd, a surprise single May 31st, and my album, Aftermath, June 14th! Not to mention, some live performances around the country. Hope to see all you Mundane Magazine readers there!
