With a wave of momentum from recent playlist placements on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and New in Alternative, Texas-raised, Austin and Los Angeles-based artist Lindsey Rose Black is stepping confidently into 2024 with a string of new singles leading up to their highly anticipated debut LP, The Myth of the American Cowboy. Blending the sonic influences of their home state with the dreamy, melancholic textures of indie pop and rock, [Artist Name] crafts a sound that resonates with fans of Mitski, Lana Del Rey, Clairo, and Mk.gee.
Their latest release, “The Butcher,” is a seductive slow-burn that intertwines a classic country shuffle with brooding indie inclinations. A post-Valentine’s Day lament, the track explores the haunting realization of a love built on the illusion of transformation—where devotion means erasing parts of oneself to fit an imagined ideal.
Produced in collaboration with John Velasquez (Vacations, Jazzie Young, Zella Day), “The Butcher” is a masterclass in tension and release, with delicate yet deliberate instrumentation that simmers beneath the surface. The steady, hypnotic shuffle beat lays the foundation, punctuated by the evocative drum work of Matthew Frazier (Local Natives). The result is a song that feels both intimate and cinematic, a slow dance in the haze of heartbreak.
Lyrically, “The Butcher” carves into themes of identity, sacrifice, and disillusionment, painting a vivid picture of love’s dark underbelly. With poignant, poetic lyricism, Lindsey Rose Black captures the ache of realizing that the person you love may only love the version of you they’ve constructed in their mind. This tension is echoed in the production, where gentle twang meets moody, atmospheric textures, making for a genre-blurring experience that lingers long after the final note.
“The Butcher’ is a sexy and introspective slow burn bop pairing a classic country shuffle beat with broodie inclinations, and explores the illusion of a love that’s built on a foundation of you becoming someone else.
It’s a loose reflection on various exes who pushed me to change little things about myself while we were together—my hair color, the way I dressed, who I was. Admittedly, I was so blinded by the rose-colored obsession of wanting to be their fantasy that I didn’t have the perspective until years later to realize I was quite literally being cut away at throughout those relationships.
As for the video, it’s a southern, BBQ-laced bisexual fever dream! Exes across the gender spectrum inspired the visual world, and I intentionally wanted to lean into the ambiguity of who our steak-eating gal is lusting after even as it’s not reciprocated.”
Accompanying the track is a visual counterpart that promises to deepen its themes and aesthetic. As anticipation builds for The Myth of the American Cowboy, “The Butcher” serves as a compelling preview of what’s to come—an artist unafraid to push sonic boundaries while staying rooted in the storytelling traditions of their Texas upbringing.
With a foot in both the indie and country worlds, Lindsey Rose Black is carving out a space uniquely their own, proving that heartbreak—and reinvention—can sound devastatingly beautiful. “The Butcher” is now available to stream on all digital platforms, with more to come from this rising star throughout the year.
