What’s the story behind ‘Exposed’?
Exposed is inspired by my life and by a desire to heal from my past and present struggles with my body. I used to weigh 240 lbs. For most of my life, I’ve been scrutinized and bullied for my body size. Although my body went through a transformation, it also left stretch marks and loose skin. These experiences created a lot of insecurities and it’s been a journey to accept and love my story, body, and identity. This song is the beginning of my process of sharing my insecurities, shame, and vulnerability. It’s raw, honest and bare.
What is something you can’t live without?
I’m definitely a foodie. I would say my Nani Nana’s (grandparents) cooking, I love Indian food and can’t live without it.
Any funny anecdotes from the time you were recording or writing this?
I was working with Akeel Henry, Kofo and Alvin Brendan on this song, and honestly just had good vibes in the studio. I laughed a lot and I loved the collaboration and production process of taking my song written on a guitar and then bringing it to life. I guess nothing specifically funny, but honestly such a fun experience!!
What’s your favorite thing to do besides music?
I love dance and film-making. I’m really lucky cuz I can still incorporate my other passions into my art. I love being a part of the directing and conception of my music videos, choreographing and incorporating movement into the visuals. I also love being outdoors, paddleboarding, camping and growing my own food.
What’s a record or artist that shaped your creativity?
Nina Simone. Definitely, her ability to speak her truth and use her music as a means of true expressions and vulnerability. She’s been a huge inspiration of mine and her song Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood is one of my favorites.
Who is an artist or band you look up to today?
I really love so many artists from Snoh Aalegra, to Jazmine Sullivan to Alicia Keys. I actually met Alicia Keys recently. I made her an art piece, a 3D mandala gift and she loved it!
What excites you the most about what you do?
I love how I get to connect with so many different people through music. I love how music can cut through all barriers and truly bring people together and it excites me to build a community rooted in connection, healing and love
